The Big Sur International Marathon is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to serve the community by producing a world-class marathon and related fun events that raise funds for contribution to local charities, while promoting health and fitness.

The Big Sur International Marathon debuted in 1986 and is regarded as one of the world\'s top destination marathons, known for its beauty and first-class organization.  More than 13,000 runners and walkers from throughout the U.S. and dozens of countries participate in a variety of events including the marathon, marathon relay, 21, 10.6 and 9 Milers.  Family and kid-oriented 3K and 5K races are also held, along with a two-day Health & Fitness Expo.  The Big Sur Marathon begins in Big Sur and runs north along California\'s scenic Highway One, 26.2 miles to Carmel, along "the ragged edge of the Western World."

The Big Sur Half Marathon on Monterey Bay, originally a spin-off event, has now grown to become one of the premiere half marathons in the Western U.S.  Each November, the Half Marathon on Monterey Bay draws 8,000 runners from throughout the country and internationally, to run along the scenic shoreline of the Monterey Peninsula through the towns of Monterey and Pacific Grove.  Offering a large prize purse, the Half Marathon attracts elite athletes from around the world.

The non-profit Big Sur Marathon organization also organizes the Mud Run, a fun, 5 mile run complete with mud pits, obstacles and military drills, and the JUST RUN youth fitness program, a free web-based program that can be used by any teacher or youth leader in any locale.  This award-winning program which promotes exercise, healthy eating and good citizenship, was developed to help combat childhood obesity and its related diseases.

For information on any of these programs, visit www.bsim.org or call 831-625-6226.

Big Sur International Marathon
April 29, 2012

The Big Sur Marathon is 26.2 miles of the most beautiful coastline in the world - and, for runners, the most challenging. The athletes who participate in the Big Sur International Marathon may draw inspiration from the spectacular views, but it takes major discipline to conquer the hills of Highway One on the way to the finish line.
