Carmel natives Thompson and Beau Lange opened Homescapes Carmel in October 1999 as a satellite to The Grove Homescapes, the store they'd built and opened in 1996 in Pacific Grove, California. Using the skills they’d developed when they transformed the condemned Grove Laundry into their award-winning showroom, the brothers renovated a 1970’s bank building into Homescapes Carmel. Both stores combined Beau’s background in Horticulture with Thompson’s training in Scenic Design, mixing plants, orchids, art and gifts with furniture and accessories collected around the world.

In 2001 the Lange brothers sold their Pacific Grove store and expanded Homescapes Carmel by acquiring an adjacent building, linking the spaces with a garden area and enlarging the selling space to 7,000 square feet. The expansion of the store led to an expansion of products and services that Homescapes Carmel could offer to both local and visiting customers, which in turn led to both local and national recognition for Homescapes Carmel. For five years running, Homescapes, Carmel has been voted “Best Furniture Store” in the Monterey County Weekly’s annual Reader’s Poll and in 2004 Homescapes Carmel was named “Retail Business of the Year” by the Carmel Chamber of Commerce. In May of 2005 Home Accents Today named Homescapes Carmel as one of their “50 Shining Stars” and Gift and Decorative Accessories Magazine has honored Homescapes Carmel with three Retail Excellence Awards: in 2001 Homescapes, Carmel received a Silver REA for Visual Merchandising, in 2004 a Gold REA for Promotion and in 2007 a Gold REA for Website Design. In addition, Homescapes Carmel was named the best “Furniture Store, Western Region” in both 2006 and 2007 by ART, the Accessories Retail Team, a national organization for the retail, wholesale and manufacturing industry.
