Do you love wine but don’t have time to become a Certified Sommelier? Do you want to learn more but it’s a little late in the game to earn a Masters in Viticulture & Enology? Have we got a class for you! Participants in Wine 101 will be led by our very own Marta Kraftzeck (who just happens to have both of those credentials, as well as a few decades of winemaking experience) as she walks us through the world of aroma and taste. From Muscat Canelli to Cabernet Sauvignon, with many stops in between, we’ll be swirling, smelling and sipping our way to wine knowledge. Using the Wine Aroma Wheel, Marta will help you discover how to describe wine’s most common aromas and flavors because the more you know, the more you enjoy!

Scheid Vineyards Adds Bocce Court
11-17-2008
Scheid Vineyards is excited to announce the addition of a regulation-length bocce court, horseshoes area and organic chef’s garden on the grounds of its Estate Winery & Tasting Room in Greenfield. These new enhancements are a delightful complement to Scheid’s wine country destination, where guests can taste award-winning wines in the converted 100-year old barn, enjoy a picnic on the patio, stroll through the demonstration vineyard, or just savor the tranquil beauty of far-reaching views.
Bocce is possibly the oldest game known to man, with roots as early as 5000 B.C. when Egyptians played a form of bocce with polished rocks. This enjoyable sport developed into its present form in Italy (the word bocce is the plural of the Italian word boccia, meaning “bowl”) and is played throughout Europe. Scheid Vineyards’ regulation bocce court is filled with traditional crushed oyster shells, the perfect surface for tossing the pallino (the small ball used as a target for throwing the bocce balls) and spocking (when one purposely hits an opponent's ball). For guests not familiar with the finer points of bocce, a set of rules by the U.S. Bocce Federation is available.
The well-known pastime of horseshoes is another enjoyable addition to Scheid’s grounds. Pitching the horseshoe is fun for the entire family and as competitive as participants want it to be. The addition of an organic chef’s garden is another treat for visitors. With cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli, and an array of herbs such as basil, thyme, rosemary, sage and mint, to name a few, the bounty from Scheid’s organic garden will be used in delicious recipes for private dinners and upcoming events.
Scheid Vineyards Estate Winery & Tasting Room is in the heart of the fertile Salinas Valley, an hour's scenic drive from the Monterey Peninsula. It is bordered by the Santa Lucia Highlands to the west and the Gabilan Range on the east. The Monterey appellation is known for its long growing season, the result of the chilled marine air from the Monterey Bay that gets pulled down the Salinas Valley each day. Due to this cooling down effect, grapes ripen more slowly and evenly, leading to exceptional wines that exhibit intense fruit flavors, deep color extraction and full varietal expression.

These diverse sites enable Scheid to unite a broad varietal experience under one label. Only the finest vineyard blocks are chosen and only the best lots are selected for bottling.
